Hinds Co. leaders deciding future of jail

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hinds County officials are meeting with corrections consultants on how to move forward with repairs to the Hinds County Detention Center.

Board of Supervisors President Robert Graham says the county met with LaSalle Corrections, of Ruston, La., Tuesday.

Pod C of the detention center was completely destroyed Monday during an inmate disturbance that started at 3 a.m. and lasted into the afternoon.

Graham says they're looking at whether to make repairs, build a new facility or privatize some of the county's corrections services.

Dozens of inmates were shipped to Rankin and Madison counties Monday afternoon.

The jail is only receiving certain felony inmates. Most misdemeanor offenders will be field released.

The county is also looking into electronic monitoring for those arrested, while jail space is hard to come by.
