RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
After Monday's jail uprising, Pod C inmates from the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond have been moved to Madison and Rankin counties.
Pod C was completely destroyed. The pod was flooded with water, ceiling tiles were ripped out, sinks were destroyed and a $400,000 control panel was shattered.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis said the damage happened after inmate Kendall Johnson got out of an isolated area. The Sheriff said Johnson went into Pod C and started trouble.
Journalist Othor Cain walked through the jail with authorities as negotiations with inmates took place Monday. Here's what Cain told WLBT about his experience.
"When I walked through I had an opportunity to walk through the water, the place was completely flooded out, they ripped the ceiling out you could see electrical wires hanging out and you could see the cardboard and the other materials they used to make these makeshift weapons that they call shanks and other things," said Cain.
In recent months, several inmates have escaped from the jail. Earlier this month, the Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved more than $1 million in bonds to pay for maintenance and upkeep at the facility.
