The four-year-old child severely injured in a dog attack in Jasper County is improving.
According to Jasper County Investigator Thad Windham the child was taken off life support Sunday and is stable. Windham says the child is undergoing treatment at Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson. He says the social worker for the child says the prognosis is good, but recovery will take a long time.
The child was attacked by the pit bull breed dog last week in a neighbors back yard. The dog had been chained to a tree and somehow got loose.
The sheriff's department seized the animal and it is now in quarantine for a required 10-days. It will then be examined by a veterinarian and if it is rabies free and otherwise healthy it will be returned to its owner.
"If the veterinarian says this dog has something wrong with it or it has rabies, at that time we could get a court order to have the dog euthanized,"said Windham. "The main thing right now I would like everybody to know is at this point we are in the ten days. We have to monitor this dog. That not only lets the community know that the dog has been examined and deemed ok. It also lets the doctors that are working on the child know what they are dealing with."
At this point no criminal charges have been filed against the dogs owner and none are expected.
