JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The "Outreach Expo 2012" is taking place at the Jackson Medical Mall until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The expo is an opportunity to learn about free and affordable community services. The first 100 people who show up to the expo will receive free state IDs. Voter registration is also available.
The expo is also a chance to get more information on upcoming state and federal laws that could impact your wallets.
For example, starting next year, you won't be able to receive federal benefits like SSI through a check in the mail. So, experts are on hand to sign individuals up for direct deposits.
"In 2013, March 2013, the federal government has a mandate where if you receive federal benefits via a paper check they're going to automatically send you a debit card that will have lots of fees associated with it, so we have many of our local lenders here today that will be signing up individuals for checking and savings accounts for the first time in their lives," said Kelli Sharpe, one of the Expo organizers.
