Sheriff Lewis: Waiting avoided a violent confrontation

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It took nearly 12 hours to end a riot at the Hinds County Detention center in Raymond Monday, but Sheriff Tyrone Lewis says he had the riot contained.

Lewis says he held off calling in S.W.A.T. teams, in an effort to avoid a violent confrontation, which he was able to do. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The county is now working under an emergency order, while facing a lack of jail space.

The order calls for the release of non-violent offenders, judges to review their dockets, and the transfer of all MDOC inmates into state custody, who have been convicted.
