JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Mississippi's Trail of Honor is helping to honor Tuskegee Airmen from the state garnering support for a commemorative license plate.
Governor Phil Bryant has signed a bill designating the Red Tails Mississippi tag.
In January the film Red Tails, depicting the courage and struggles of the elite flying group, opened in theaters nationwide.
The license plate recognizes the 15 service members in the state who served as Tuskegee Airmen.
Artist and historian Dr. Clint Martin of McComb designed the tag.
It displays the aircraft his uncle, who was also from McComb, flew during World War II.
"We had two to come out of little old Pike County. I thought that was great, but this airplane was named after him. His name was Walter Downs number 45 with the 301st Fighter Squadron. He was commander of the 301st Fighter Squadron," said Martin.
The Red Tails license plates cost an additional $31.00.
Proceeds benefit the Trail of Honor.
