A day on the water at the Ross Barnett Reservoir nearly turned tragic for a family enjoying a day of boating.
Madison County authorities received an emergency call around 3:30 Monday afternoon.
Emergency Management Director Butch Hammack said a family of four from Leake County was in a small bass boat that began taking on water.
Crews had to rescue two adults and two children during the height of afternoon storms.
The boat sank but the passengers managed to stay afloat.
Rescuers said the family had to tread water for about 30 minutes.
"The call came in as a boat taking on water. It was a distress call from the driver of the boat. Once we arrived on scene, we were able to locate the boat about a mile from where we are here from Browns Landing," Hammack said.
No one was injured, and no names have been released.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks is investigating what caused the boat to sink.
