Schools outs sodas, not sports drinks

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

While many schools have ousted sodas, a new study finds fruit drinks, sports drinks and other beverages with added sugar continue to be widely available.

Researchers say a quarter of high school students were able to buy sodas in school in 2011 -- compared to more than half in 2006.

But last year -- about 83-percent could purchase other beverages with added sugar -- like sports and fruit drinks.

Many medical experts say those drinks fuel childhood obesity.

This study is from researchers at the University of Michigan and is published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
