AMR: Heat illness safety tips

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Officials from AMR have some tips that could help you save someone suffering from a heat related illness.

Public affairs manager Jim Pollard says placing ice packs on a heat stroke victim is an extremely effective cooling technique.

Heat stroke is rare, but one key symptom is a high body temperature.

Pollard says when caring for a heat stroke victim, place ice packs around the neck, armpits, wrists, groin and ankles. Those are areas where veins are closest to the surface of the skin.

If ice isn't available, you can also use other cooling methods.

"Cool the individual as quickly as possible, but not to the point of shivering, you can give the individual a cool but not cold bath, for example, make sure you keep the head above the water, you can also put wet cloths on the person and fan the individual with either an electric fan or even stiff cardboard," said Pollard.

Some basic heat safety tips include, drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, stay cool indoors and avoid strenuous activity, if possible.
