Dozens violate dress code on first day of school in Canton

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There was a wardrobe malfunction for dozens of Canton High School students on the first day of school.

School officials say nearly 100 students were placed in in-school suspension for wearing shoes that violated the school dress code.

"We had kids with neon shoes, neon shoe strings, red shoes, black shoes, gang related shoes," said Principal Shirley Sanders. "We have a policy that is firmly stated on our dress code, which is in our handbook, and is given out at registration."

The students were allowed to call their parents to bring them proper attire. Most parents say they support the school uniform system, but somehow dozens of kids slipped under their parents fashion radar.

"The dress code is vital.  They're trying to prevent the possibility of anything that could be gang related as far as color goes and so forth, that's why they stress the colors and stuff not be worn in the school. We're proud about it as parents. I am," said parent Charles Smith.

Students say if allowed, clothing labels would play a huge role on their social scene.

"You would get talked about if you don't have what everybody else has and if you don't look up to par and things like that so if everyone pretty much looks the same it will keep down confrontation," said Junior Gabriella Steele.

School officials say they hope to prevent everything from bullying to gang clashes with the school uniform policy, which parents and students have been warned about, with strict enforcement.
