JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Former Hinds County sheriff Malcolm McMillin has harsh words for his successor.
WLBT News reported Tuesday about a report commissioned by current Sheriff Tyrone Lewis back when Lewis was a candidate running against McMillin. The report was compiled by Stanford Campaigns, which bills itself as an opposition research firm for Democratic campaigns.
The report criticizes McMillin's leadership as sheriff, claiming there was a rise in crime, that McMillin made controversial hires, that he gave special treatment to some inmates and that he was fiscally irresponsible.
Sheriff Lewis, who defeated McMillin last year, has said many of the problems making headlines today are inherited from McMillin's administration.
The former sheriff does not agree.
"I think Tyrone is inept, incompetent and clueless," McMillin told WDBD-Fox 40 on Tuesday. "I think he's doing such a poor job of running the jail that he has to look around for someone to blame.
McMillin continued, "He said they were big boys. Well, big boys, hitch up your big-girl panties and do the job you were elected to do."
Sheriff Lewis says his department is not blaming anyone, and that the report speaks for itself.
