The new East Frontage Road between Old Agency Road and Steed Road in Ridgeland is now accessible to drivers.
Mississippi Department of Transportation officials said the new road should help shorten the morning commute for people headed to schools in the area.
The new East Frontage Road is so new few people are taking advantage of it yet.
"We did this in an expeditious manner to help school traffic in Ridgeland, Mississippi, right now we haven't seen very many people use it, we just want everybody to know it is open and will be beneficial for students," said MDOT Engineer Brian Ratliff.
The new East Frontage Road construction is part of a major re-construction project along I-55. The work is expected to be complete by November 2014.
