JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The man who killed a Jackson police officer will spend the next 30 years in prison.
Latwan Smith will serve 20 years for manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.
He'll also serve 10 years for a convicted felon with a gun charge.
A mental evaluation found the 26-year-old could be mentally ill and that's why prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
Smith shot and killed officer Glen Agee in August 2010.
Agee was a rookie on the force when he died in the line of duty.
Smith escaped from the back of a police cruiser near the Hinds County Detention Center.
A chase ensued and Agee was shot.
