Onstar shuts down Alzheimer's patient's SUV involved in chase

Posted: Updated:
HARRISON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A police chase with an 80-year-old Alzheimer's patient came to an end Friday morning after Onstar shut-off his car.

The driver of the white SUV was traveling at speeds up to 90 miles an hour on I-20 near FM 450 in Harrison County. Traffic was backed up for nearly an hour. Authorities shut down the westbound lanes of the interstate in order to get the man off the roadway.

We're told he thought he was going to a doctor's appointment in Shreveport when he headed out from Minden, Louisiana and ended up at the Hallsville exit.

The trooper says it took longer than expected to stop him. He'd been going back and forth between inner and outer lanes, moved to the outer lane and then authorities used Onstar to shut his car down.

The man has been loaded onto an ambulance.

Fortunately, we are not hearing any reports of any injuries.
