JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson police are searching for the gunman accused in the death of a 16-month-old girl.

Gunfire rang out about 11:40 P.M. Sunday at 249 Lexington Avenue.

Monday morning daylight revealed a blood-covered sidewalk and door at the home where little Kiona Sherel was shot. Mary Jackson, 50, as also shot.

Sherel was shot in the head and died about an hour after the shooting. Jackson was shot in the hand and is expected to recover. Both were outside when the shooting occurred.

Investigators say the two victims were bystanders caught in gunfire from a nearby altercation.

Police say they've responded to numerous incidents in the area in the past. However, most residents say they don't feel unsafe in the neighborhood and were shocked at Sherel's death.

"Yeah, I feel safe, you know. I guess, I feel safe here. It's my home, I have to stay here. So, they don't bother me and I don't bother them," says neighbor Etta Wilson.

Police have issued a murder warrant for Jarvis Harper, 27. If you have any information on his whereabouts, you're urged to call Crimestoppers at (601) 355-TIPS (8477).
