In my second year of General Surgery residency at UMC, my mother was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer.  Seeing her go through surgery, followed by chemo and radiation, was very hard.  At Christmas that year, she took off her wig as a joke with the family.  I lost it.  I have never seen her look so fragile.  My mother had always been unbreakable.  I never want any of my patients to have to look that weak and frail.  I have always regretted not donating my hair to her that year.  As I finish my surgical training this June, I am hoping to develop the breast cancer center at my new hospital.  Donating my hair this year will be the start of my lifelong dedication to the fight against breast cancer.

Then late 2011 my brother was diagnosed with mesothelioma, he passed away August 2012. That further motivated me to stand for the cause.  Just to know that someone will benefit from it gives me complete satisfaction.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor.

Natalie - West, Mississippi

Many years ago I watched my aunt shave her head during her chemo treatments.  She tried hair piece after hair piece and could never find one that she felt comfortable with.  My hope is that my donation will allow someone to have the"look" they desire as the continue the fight.  While my aunt survived many others have not.  This is my small way of supporting them all.

I have always wanted to donate my hair and has never been able to grow my hair long enough well now it is finally long enough and I want to do this in honor of my aunt that is a survivor of breast cancer.

Leah - Madison, Mississippi

My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor but she never lost her hair.  I think that everyone should have the opportunity to still look nice whether its their real hair or a wig.

Mandy - Walnut Grove, Mississippi

I am donating because it may be me one day in need of a wig. It's something I can do

Shirley - Richland, Mississippi

My mother Wanda Grogan and my father died of cancer and I have 14 other family members that have died of cancer, this is an issue close to my heart.

Melanie - Richland, Mississippi

It's a good cause.

Kandy - Brandon, Mississippi

I have a dear friend, Walter Youngblood when going thru treatments lost his hair but what grace he had. I have seen Barbie Bassett do this several years and thought how blessed my family is that no one has thankfully had to go thru the trauma of losing their hair while suffering with cancer.  God has blessed me with long, thick hair, what a simple way I can give back, for others who aren't able to keep their hair when going thru treatment.

Heather - Vicksburg, Mississippi

I want to do something to help those dealing with issues I have not had to face.  This is the least I can do!

Jennifer - Pearl, Mississippi

Everyone deserves to feel beautiful.  I feel honored to be able to help anyone in need.

Michelle - Brandon, Mississippi

We lost my mother to cancer in 2001 and I am donating in her memory.

Trinette - Jackson, Mississippi

Various cancers have taken the lives of a few of my family members and a family friend is currently battling the disease.  I'm donating my hair in their honor.

Emily - Brandon, Mississippi

I have never been affected by anyone with cancer however, I would want to know that if I was ever affected directly or indirectly that someone would be willing to give a piece of themselves to help. It grows back and as small of a gesture it is I hope that it helps a person gain some of the confidence lost by loosing hair due to cancer treatments.

Cheryl - Madison, Mississippi

I am participating to remember my Mom...Lois Ross Caldwell. My mom was a tower of strength throughout her whole breast cancer journey. She never complained that she got cancer and told us over and over how God had truly given her a peace about it all. God gave her the gift of encouragement and always had a smile and kind words for everyone she came in contact with. I hope I can pass this down to my kids and grand kids. I am growing my hair in her memory...we love you Mama/Mama Lois!

Susan - Vicksburg, Mississippi

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I missed the 2011 event, so I now have more than enough to donate, in memory of my brother, David Reid.

Melanie - Lena, Mississippi

I am donating my hair because there are plenty of women and children that need it and it would just be a waste to throw it away.

Jack - Vicksburg, Mississippi

To help the cancer patients ... My dad lost a battle with cancer and he lost his hair from chemo..I been growing my hair for this for some time now ... I get strange looks from people sometimes because of my hair but I know its for the good.....

Sara - Star, Mississippi

My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of 2011. She had a really hard time dealing with the fact that she lost her hair. She was very excited when she received a wig that she could wear until her hair grew back. I think every woman should have that opportunity. I think it makes them feel good about themselves. It helps with coping with the whole situation.

Amy - Raymond, Mississippi

For my neighbor and dear friend that passed away last year after her second bought with cancer.

Pearl - Prentiss, Mississippi

I have done it in the past and I just did it again. I am doing this because I had/have family and friends that has/have cancer. I wanted to put my hair to great use and be able to make someone smile and feel good about themselves.

Dana - Star, Mississippi

It's a simple way to give to those in need.  Hair is something a lot of us take for granted but is a great way to help others.  I am also trying to teach my 5 yr old daughter about giving.

 Pam - Carthage, Mississippi

My mother had breast cancer and has been cancer free for over 10 years.

Dena - Florence, Mississippi

In memory of sweet friends Vanessa Pearson and Celeste Pickett, who lost their battles with cancer, and in support of dear friends Kathy Tillman and Donna Reiss, who are going through this battle now.  Strong, beautiful women, every one of them!
