JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The man accused of shooting and killing a 16-month-old girl has turned himself in to authorities. The Hinds County Sheriff's Department says Jarvis Harper, 27, turned himself in about 4 PM Monday.
Jackson police have issued a murder warrant for his arrest. An initial court appearance has not been set.
Gunfire erupted about 11:40 PM Sunday at 249 Lexington Avenue.
Monday morning, daylight revealed a blood covered the sidewalk and door at the home where toddler, Kiona Sherel, and Mary Jackson, 50, were shot.
Sherel was shot in the head and died at University Medical Center about an hour after the shooting.
Jackson was shot in the hand and is expected to recover.
Both were outside when the shooting occurred. Investigators say the two victims were bystanders, caught in gunfire from a nearby altercation.
Police say they've responded to numerous incidents in the area. However, most residents we spoke with say it's generally a quite area.
"Yeah I feel safe, you know. I guess, I feel safe here. It's my home, I have to stay here. So, they don't bother me and I don't bother them," says neighbor Etta Wilson.
The shooting remains under investigation.
