
A Meridian woman was sentenced to time in a federal prison for operating an identity theft fraud scheme Tuesday.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said 59 year old Peggy Thornton scammed her elderly neighbor, who had Alzheimer's Disease, into living with her.
Thornton then forged signatures on an account to transfer the victim's money. She spent the money on a swimming pool and remodeling her home, as well as a variety of other personal purchases.
Thornton was sentenced to 41 months in prison, followed by three years supervised release. She must also pay over $107,000 to two elderly victims and forfeit her home in Meridian.
