CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Overshoot a green at the Canton Country Club hole, and you'll find yourself in the real ruff. A giant sinkhole has been in the middle of Penn Road for over a year now.

The roads been closed just as long, neighbors say the barricades constantly fall down, and many people ignore them.

"This road has had a pothole a human could easily fall off in, a car could fall halfway off in and a dog has fallen off in it" said area resident Less Penn. "It's just the fact you have this road out here that's very dangerous and for the citizens of Canton to have to deal with this it's unsafe for everybody."

Residents say the city has put Penn Road on a street improvement plan list of the worst streets to fix, but for months nothings been done, even though the funding has been in place.

Resident Susan Edwards says,

"I know it's politics" said Susan Edwards, another resident. "I've personally been to the Mayor. The neighborhood has been to the mayor. We founded an association and went to the Mayor and we were totally ignored."

Mayor William Truly who was out of town talked to WLBT news by phone. He said the bids the city received to repair the road were too high, and that city Alderman are now asking engineers to provide their qualifications to the city, in hopes of getting the street repaired for a better price.

He says the delay was only to save taxpayers money.

Mayor Truly says Penn Road is one of 22 the city plans to pave, once they get an engineer in place.

Residents who use Penn Road say the city's plan isn't up to par and that time is money, and they believe the city's wasted enough of both.
