Gift of school supplies for Jackson schools

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Lanier High and its feeder schools got a surprise Friday morning -- free school supplies!

WLBT News caught up with the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation as they delivered a box to Walton Elementary School. It was brimming with paper, pens, pencils, erasers, hand sanitizer and more.

The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation said it wants to solidify its presence as a partner with nearby schools.

"This is our effort to make sure school is getting off to a good start. We're gonna be partners for the whole school season," said JMMF Executive Director Primus Wheeler.

Walton Principal Gwen Gardner said the gift will help out as students and staff ease into the new year.

"Just this morning we had kids coming up to the office asking if we had extra supplies. We had given out as much as we had. To receive this gift today was just wonderful," Gardner said.

Boxes of supplies were also dropped off to eight other schools, as well as Operation Shoestring and the Neighborhood Christian Center. JMMF employees and area businesses contributed more than $5,000 for the supplies.
