Pearl street floods, residents want city to fix drainage issue

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Pearl neighborhood is flooded and residents say they want the city to fix the drainage issues that have plagued the area for years.

Homeowners along Skylane Drive could be seen wading through three feet of water in some places on Saturday afternoon, even bringing out a canoe.

One resident says she has been asking the city to fix the drainage problem for 20 years.

A neighbor says water went into his rental home after cars drove through the high water.

Residents say the road floods each time a heavy thunderstorm rolls through.

"There's no sense in our mayor or the police not coming out here and doing something about these kids coming through here and flying down the road and knowing it's going to get in these people's houses," says homeowner Terresa Bounds.

"Well, within about a 30 minute period of a good downfall, my house floods. My whole yard floods. There's nothing I can do about it, just sit there and watch it," says renter James Toler.

Residents say city workers did clean nearby drains earlier this year but more must be done.

While WLBT crews were on the scene, crews did close the roadway to traffic.
