"The Loving Story" screened

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was 45 years ago, a couple made history and national headlines because they wanted to get married.

The reason it caused such an uproar is because Richard Loving was a white man and Mildred Loving was a half-black and half Cherokee woman.

A documentary was produced on the case that went to the Supreme Court.

The Mississippi NAACP held a special screening of the film at the COFO Civil Rights Education Center on Lynch Street in Jackson.

It was prompted by the case of Charles and Te' Andrea Wilson, a couple trying to get married in First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, but were turned away.

Charles Wilson said, "They put a law on the books that they couldn't get married because of the color of their skin each. We could not even get married in this church because of the color of our skin. That might not been a law, but it was a law of the church, so either way you look at it, racism still stands today and this is 2012."

There was also a panel discussion and the event was free and open to the public.
