JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Tuesday is "Go Direct Day" at the Salvation Army's Beasley Road location.
The City of Jackson is teaming up with several banks and community organizations to sign federal benefit recipients up for direct deposit accounts.
Starting, March 1, 2013, federal payments will no longer come through the mail. Bankers say electronic banking is actually safer and more convenient than using checks.
"They know that their money is in their account at midnight when they're to expect it, they don't have to wait on the mailman to bring their checks they can travel, they don't have to worry about being home to get their money," said BanCorpSouth Vice President of Community Development.
If those who receive federal benefit checks don't sign up for direct deposit before next March, they'll receive a debit card. The debit card will charge fees.
"Go Direct Day" ends at 2 p.m. The Salvation Army Corps Center is located at 570 Beasley Road.
