JPS needs bus drivers

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The first-year superintendent for Jackson Public Schools hit on several topics during a Wednesday morning press conference, but focused primarily on the district's transportation woes.

Cedrick Gray did not take any questions but revealed the district is suffering from a shortage of bus drivers.  He said it's a problem compounded by recent rezoning.

Gray said JPS currently has 314 drivers, which according to his own numbers, is about 30 shy of what is necessary.

The district transportation office has 340 buses to pick up and drop off 23,000 students daily, and Gray said they need 347 drivers.

He encouraged anyone interested in driving buses for the district to apply.
