JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Major crime statistics released by the Jackson Police Department show an overall decrease in property crimes and an increase in violent crimes in the capital city.
Auto theft showed the biggest decline with 750 through August 19, 2012, compared to 949 the same period last year. That's a 21 percent decrease.
When it comes to violent crime, homicide spiked 57.1 percent with 44 killings through August 19 this year, compared to 28 through the same period last year.
