JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Mayor of Southaven will keep his paycheck for at least the next couple of weeks.
Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Dwayne Thomas said he'll rule in twenty days whether or not Southaven Mayor Greg Davis should keep his salary. That'll give the State Auditor's office time to answer Judge Thomas' questions regarding a legal code the state tried to use to prosecute Davis.
The State Auditor hopes to strip Mayor Davis of his paycheck. The state claims Davis owes Southaven $73,000 for using city money to pay for personal expenses on various trips.
Davis' attorney Michael Heilman said he's not surprised with the outcome in Thursday's hearing.
"I expected pretty much what happened. The court would have additional questions, the court, the judge is a good judge and he makes sure things are done appropriately and correctly," said Heilman.
Davis has already paid $96,000 back to the city of Southaven.
