New driver's license for vets

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippi has become the 16th state to honor our veterans with a special driver's license. The new license will have a flag with the word "veteran" imprinted on it.

Veterans will have to provide verifying documentation from the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board before they go to their local driver's license station, but officials say the benefits are worth the effort.

"I can think of no better way than to be able to honor our veterans in that way. A lot of times there may be discounts, there may be several that vets may be able to take advantage of and a person who is a veteran can't always carry a DD214 or other discharge document that they may have," said Randy Reeves, executive director of the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board.

The process to get the paperwork is simple, but the certification from the Veterans' Affairs Board must be presented before you can get the new veteran's license.

The new licenses are available now and veterans who want the license before the normal renewal period must pay the replacement fees to get the document.
