PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Governor Phil Bryant and M.E.M.A. Executive Director Robert Latham held a press conference on preparations for tropical storm Isaac Friday.

State officials have been in communication with coastal counties, looking at possible timelines for the storm, and when they could begin response and evacuation procedures.

M.E.M.A. Director Robert Latham says, "We've got plenty of time, regardless of what the future tracks from the Hurricane Center show.  We've got time for people to prepare and do the things necessary to protect themselves."

Governor Bryant delayed his trip to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, due to the storm.

Residents are being urged to create their own evacuation plans, and to enact them when voluntary evacuations go into effect.

State officials say Katrina taught us a lot of lesson about the possible deadly effects of waiting till mandatory evacuations are issued.

Governor Bryant says, "We've been through this before.  This is safety kits, this is batteries this is knowing where elderly citizens might be, relatives you might be in contact with if you need prescriptions filled.  People need to have their personal evacuation plans in place."
