New museum opens in Vicksburg

Posted: Updated:

A new museum and interpretive center about the lower Mississippi River, opened in Vicksburg Friday.

The museum building is attached to the bow of the retired Motor Vessel Mississippi Four which is permanently beached at the Vicksburg waterfront.

The center features a working model of the Mississippi River and more.

"We wanted to make it very kid friendly. We wanted to have children come out here and walk through the model, walk in the water, basically like that, that is why it is covered with a rubberized material, much like we have in playgrounds. We want kids to come out here so 10 years from now, they can remember walking in the Mississippi," said Civil Engineering Technician, David Maggio.

Kids are allowed in the river model, as long as they are barefooted.
