JPD to be out in large numbers this weekend

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An additional 100 Jackson Police officers will be on the street this weekend in an effort to curb violence.

JPD brass made the announcement Friday evening at Precinct 3. The goal is to make officers visible on major roadways and in targeted neighborhoods.

Despite a leak on Twitter, police will still have checkpoints in the city and will change locations throughout the night. After a recent string of violence, JPD hopes more visibility in the coming days and possibly weeks will deter crime.

"If it means putting more officers out there during different times, peak times, within the city then that's what we will do. If it will help in anyway to get a handle on some of the violent crimes in the city," said JPD Chief Rebecca Coleman.

Jackson police changed officers' schedule to ensure no overtime would occur as a result of the operation.
