RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Pelahatchie Shore Park in Rankin County went to the dogs Saturday for Community Animal Rescue and Adoption's annual fundraiser.

The 5th annual "Dog Days of Summer" was a hit for animal lovers and their furry, four-legged friends.

About 1,200 people gave a donation of dog food to attend the event.

There were family friendly activities, including the WLBT Pet Parade and Pet Contest. WLBT's Marsha Thompson, Eric Law, and Stephanie Bell Flynt were judges.

C.A.R.A. hoped to raise about $15,000 at the event.

Meanwhile, a supporter of the organization presented a check for $15,000  at "Dog Days of Summer" to help build a dog park.

"We have about eight acres. So, we're putting the dog park just adjacent to C.A.R.A., and we'll build a fence around the whole area and then we will start doing by sections," says C.A.R.A. board member Denise Cantrell.

"Dog Days of Summer" is the no kill animal shelter's largest fundraiser of the year.
