PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The state of Mississippi's Emergency Operations Center was activated at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency in Pearl at 7 a.m. Monday.
Hundreds of state officials from various agencies are gathered together to watch Tropical Storm Isaac's path and prepare an emergency action plan for the state.
The operation center's activation Monday follows Governor Phil Bryant's state of emergency declaration. During an announcement at MEMA headquarters Sunday, Bryant urged residents on the coast and central part of the state to take precautions.
"It is important for Mississippians to take this storm seriously and prepare now for its potential impact," Bryant said.
While several models project the path of Isaac, most models predict the tropical storm will strengthen to a hurricane on Monday.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Amite, Pike, Walthall and Wilkinson Counties.
The NHC is also reporting that Isaac will make landfall Wednesday at 1 a.m. as a "strong" Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour.
