Gov. Bryant: Take this threat seriously

Posted: Updated:
GULFPORT, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Gov. Phil Bryant briefed the media from Gulfport Monday morning about the precautionary measures everyone in Tropical Storm Isacc's path should take and how the state is preparing.

Bryant said the state is sending 1,500 National Guard personnel to the coast along with 45 state troopers to help with traffic flow.

Bryant said even though Isaac is projected to make landfall as a category 2 storm, emergency management officials are preparing for a category 3.

He emphasized that residents should take this threat seriously.

He said it's too early for contraflow for a mandatory evacuation on the Gulf Coast; however, he said, things like that could change within a few hours.

Right now, he's stressing the importance of buying non-perishable items, batteries, gas, etc...

"This is a huge storm," MEMA Director Robert Latham warned. "Even if  it were to shift to the west, it won't change the impact to the Gulf Coast. The message to our citizens is to not take this lightly."
