Shelters available for pets in Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Animals large and small continue to storm into the Jackson metro area. Their owners are retreating from Hurricane Isaac as it moves inland from the Gulf Coast.

Pet owners hauled horses up from the coastal area of Louisiana. The temporary lodging is Barn 10 at the State Fairgrounds. Plenty of room is available.

Two doors down in Barn 8, the first small four-legged arrival was a loved one from New Orleans. Prince, a little white dog and his feathered buddies, Zeek and Yoyo, will ride the storm out here. The owner lost everything in Hurricane Katrina except his beloved pets.

Dr. Brigid Elchos is coordinating shelter for the Mississippi Board of Animal Health.

"It's really important to take care of animals because an animal emergency is a human emergency. And we know a lot of people find their animals to be part of their family and we want to encourage evacuation of the whole family."

Pet owners are encouraged to bring any special food or vet supplies. The fairgrounds facility can house from 250-300 animals at no charge.

Another safe house is the Mississippi Animal Rescue League in Jackson. They have emergency provisions on standby. Call 601-969-1631 or go to their website: www.msarl.org
