JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The huge warehouse fire on Palmyra street in downtown Jackson has been knocked down, but firefighters remain on the scene monitoring hot spots.
Four Jackson fire engines brought it under control around 5 this evening.
But two hours earlier you could see the thick blue-black smoke for miles away as the global plastics recyclers warehouse burned.
An eyewitness described what he saw, "There was an actual kind of explosion in the corner. Right after the explosion, I ran across and tried to get the attention of the people in the building over here and after the explosion and the flames started coming out, people, I guess they work over there; they started running out to the end of the building.
He said there was also a second explosion in the facility which housed, not only plastic, but cardboard.
There were 8 employees and all got out with no injuries.
Chief Jackson fire investigator Greg Travis says they will try to determine the cause of the fire once it is completely extinguished.
