The tornado threat from Isaac continues across south Mississippi. A Tornado WATCH is in effect until Midnight (12:00am) for Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Covington, Franklin, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, Lincoln, Pike, Simpson, Smith, Walthall, and Wilkinson Counties.
Tornadoes in land falling tropical systems tend to be weak, but they can spin up quickly without much notice. Stay weather aware tonight. New tornado watches will likely be issued overnight and into Thursday.
As of mid-afternoon, Isaac was downgraded to a Tropical Storm. Maximum sustained winds are at 70mph. Present movement is to the northwest at about 6mph.
The outer heavy rain bands associated with Isaac continue to slowly rotate northward. This rain bands will impact central Mississippi this afternoon with gusty winds and heavy rain.
Flooding remains a big concern across our area. The heaviest rain and biggest flood concern is for south-central and southwest Mississippi over the next couple of days. The heaviest rainfall totals will be in southwest Mississippi, where 6"-12" of rain may fall. Elsewhere, rainfall totals will range from 2"-6" with the lightest rainfall totals being north of I-20 and east of I-55. If you live in an area that floods, you do need to be ready to move to higher ground.
Isaac will pull away from our area going into the weekend, but there will remain a risk of some scattered afternoon showers and storms through early next week.
