A historic tourist attraction has been forced to close temporarily in Vicksburg because of Tropical Storm Isaac.
The area has been hit with relentless rain and high winds. Consequently, problems such as power outages have been compounded.
Calls have poured into the Warren County Sheriff's Office about downed trees. Power lines snapped like toothpicks under the weight. Isaac's powerful punch has also shutdown the sprawling Vicksburg National Military Park.
"We have at least a dozen trees down across a tour road. Many more branches, several trees still leaning. It's still blowing and raining out there so I'm sure we will have more down before it's over," said Mike Madell, superintendent of the park.
The closure applies to all uses, including for those visitors who use the park for walking, running or bicycling. No one can go around the gates and barricades due to the unsafe conditions throughout the park.
No word on when the park will re-open for tourists.
