Child abuse suspects expected to plead guilty

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two Rankin County friends facing 14 counts of felony child abuse are expected to each plead guilty. Steven Magee and Rebecca Harrell are accused of physically abusing and nearly killing Magee's 4-year-old son.

Magee and Harrell were scheduled for a status hearing in Rankin County Court Tuesday, but their case was not called.

Outside of court WLBT spoke to Callie Brown. Brown is the mom of the 4-year-old victim. Brown said she wants justice for her son. Justice to her would mean life in prison for Magee and Harrell, Brown said.

It was last October when the little boy stopped breathing while he was with Magee and Harrell at their Rankin County home. When the toddler arrived to the hospital doctors discovered the boy suffered numerous fractures and bleeding in the brain.

Brown said her son is doing much better now.

"He was on life support for one day, the next day he got off it and he had some broken bones, but he's had a couple of surgeries, but he's doing real great," Brown said.

The little boy is now in DHS custody. Magee and Harrell are expected to face trial the week of Sept. 17.
