JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A veteran Jackson police officer arrested on bribery charges is free on $15,000 bond.

Sgt. Richard McGahey, 43, of Clinton was taken into custody Tuesday Night in Jackson for taking a bribe in exchange for granting a field release.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood told reporters one of his investigators arrested McGahey and there was little else he could say.

"We worked with the FBI on this case, and in doing so, we developed evidence that this officer took money to get rid of arrest warrants basically. It's called a field warrant, so that's about all I can say. I can't say much other than the fact that we have arrested a member of our law enforcement community, which when that happens it indicts all of us, it makes people think that all law enforcement may be not doing as they should," said Hood.

Assistant Chief Lee Vance with the Jackson Police Department told us about McGahey's years on the force.

"Well, he has been here about 20 years. He has worked in a lot of different areas, patrol, investigations, narcotics, and he is a member of the swat team."

A trial has been set by Judge Jeff Weill for February 1, 2013 for McGahey.
