JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds join Charles Evers in celebration of his 90th birthday in downtown Jackson.

It was a packed house Sunday night for the festivities at the King Edward Hotel.

The event was called "90 Years on the Highway of Life."

There were musical tributes throughout the night featuring blues and gospel performances.

Local dignitaries, elected officials and friends came out to honor the older brother of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers.

Myrlie Evers-Williams also attended the birthday bash.

The community activist owns WMPR radio station and hosts a weekly talk show.

The outspoken, longtime Republican is the former mayor of Fayette.

"He stepped up when his brother died. They didn't have to call him twice. He was here and he's been on the battlefield ever since, and he loves his people. He loves his community and I just feel like personally he's done a tremendous work and it really will not be known or felt until he's gone, and then history will be able to tell the story of Charles Evers," said daughter Carolyn Evers Cockrell.

James Charles Evers officially turns 90 on September 11th.
