Charles Evers' birthday celebration protested

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Not everyone was singing Happy Birthday to the Civil Rights icon, Charles Evers, Sunday evening in downtown Jackson.

A group of protestors, led by David Archie, held signs outside of the King Edward Hotel.

Some of the signs called Evers a fake or said he was not for the people.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department and Jackson Police were on hand for the protest.

Archie says it was a peaceful protest, but quickly became political after Sheriff Tyrone Lewis was invited to speak at the birthday event.

Archie claims Evers is not concerned with helping others.
