Sheriff: Trooper's wife sets home on fire, lies to authorities
The wife of an Upstate trooper is accused of setting her own home on fire and then lying to authorities.
Paula L. Rose is charged with third-degree arson for a fire at her home on Riley Smith Dr. on July 17.
Rose is the wife of South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper Homer Rose III, according to deputies.
Deputies said Rose called 911 and reported three men were inside her garage attempting to get into her gun safe.
Rose told dispatchers that one of the men saw her inside through the window. She told them she ran to the back of her home and hid in a back room.
Rose told dispatchers she heard a noise and then saw her house was on fire.
Deputies said a Rose told them she was able to get out of the home without being hurt. Deputies and Wade Hampton Fire Department arrived on scene and were able to get the fire out.
Greenville County arson and property crime investigators were called to the scene.
Deputies said a K-9 trained to detect ignitable liquids used to start fires was also called to the scene.
The K-9, Misty, did alert officers to ignitable liquids in the fire debris, according to deputies.
Arson investigators said they also collected fire debris samples from the scene and sent them to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to be tested.
Deputies said the story Rose told them was untrue and she started the fire.
She is also charged with burning personal property to defraud insurer, making a false insurance claim to obtain benefits for fire or explosion and filing a false police report of a felony violation. Investigators said Rose did file an insurance claim with State Farm Insurance Company regarding the fire at the residence and did receive insurance benefits
Rose was released on $40,000 bond Wednesday afternoon.
Trooper Rose was not at home at the time of the fire.
