Crystal Springs church will be honored with national award

CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Central Mississippi church will be honored this week with the Department of Defense Freedom Award.

Sunday morning the congregation celebrated. Crystal Springs United Methodist Church is only one of 15 recipients across the country, to win the award.

The church is the only award winner in Mississippi this year. An appreciation ceremony was held at the church Sunday morning. The category under which Crystal Springs UMC won the award recognizes employers who take extra steps to support military members and their families, especially during deployment.

"This is a surprising event for this church, being that it's not one of the largest churches in Mississippi, but the thing about this church is it supports its military members, which is what this is all about. And I'm awfully proud to be a member of this church," said Brigadier General Robert Thomas, MS. National Guard.

"It's just unusual that you have an employer like this church, which goes above and beyond what the federal law and what we expect of them," said Jack Wallace, Chairman, MS Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

The pastor of the Crystal Springs UMC and a member of the national guard.

Brigadier General Robert Thomas and others will travel to Washington D.C. to accept the award on Thursday.
