Metro counties lead state in reported West Nile cases

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi State Health Department is reporting 29 new cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) this week.

The new cases were reported in the following counties:

  • Adams (2)
  • Claiborne (1)
  • Harrison (1)
  • Hinds (5)
  •  Humphreys (1)
  • Jackson (1)
  • Jefferson Davis (1)
  •  Lamar (1)
  • Lauderdale (1)
  • Madison (5)
  • Perry (1)
  • Rankin (6)
  • Sunflower (1)
  • Warren (1)
  • Yazoo (1) 

That brings the state total to 169 cases and four deaths.

The hardest hit counties are in the Jackson Metro area.  Rankin County has 38 reported cases of WNV, followed by Hinds County with 19 and Madison County with 18.

State Health Officials warn that we are in the peak of West Nile Season and advise people to use precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
