JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Regardless of who you plan to vote for this November, Gene Everitt, the co-president for the League of Women Voters for Mississippi said you need to make sure you can vote by beating the voter registration deadline.
"The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is October 6th, that's a Saturday," said Everitt.
It only takes a few minutes to fill out the voter registration application. You can pick up a form from your county circuit clerk or get it online at the Secretary of State's website.
"I think everybody needs to take the right to vote very seriously," said Everitt.
Once you've registered you'll know you're set to cast your vote when you receive your voter registration I.D. card in the mail.
"If they don't receive a card in the mail voters should really go ahead and double check with the circuit clerk's office," said Everitt.
Last November Mississippi voters approved voter I.D. legislation for the state. However, it's likely that during this November's election most voters won't need their photo I.D. to vote.
"It's not in effect at this time it has not been approved by the Justice Department, so we should not be asked to show I.D., the exception to that would be a first time voter who mailed in their registration form," said Everitt.
Voters who've moved to a new county since the last election need to register in their new county. Also, a sample ballot for the November election is on the Secretary of State's website.
