Challenged Airwave contract survives

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Another attempt to cancel a controversial contract between Hinds County and Airwave, LLC, the company that maintains county radios, failed Monday.

Supervisor Phil Fisher, who has consistently raised questions about what Airwave, LLC actually does, led the charge to get the supervisors to cancel their contract October 1.

"I have not heard anything from Airwave, no monthly reports, no summaries, nothing," said Fisher. "To my knowledge, we are the only account Airwave has. So, they are not dealing with anybody else but us. And so Mr. President I would make a motion to terminate Airwave's contract."

Fisher's motion to cancel the contract failed after he couldn't get a majority. Supervisor Peggy Hobson Calhoun joined with Fisher in voting to cancel the contract, but Supervisor Doug Anderson teamed up with board president Robert Graham in voting to keep the contract. Supervisor Kenneth Stokes did not vote, although he was present.

Nathan Hargrove of Airwave, LLC addressed supervisors at Monday's meeting.

"It is really frustrating for us, to be frank with you. That our hard work, that our people do out there every day, on this system, it goes unappreciated, or appears to be unappreciated," said Hargrove.

Supervisor Fisher said the Airwave, LLC contract runs in the $740,000 a year range.
