JSU prepares for Southern

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Southern will play its first game without head coach Stump Mitchell on Saturday against Jackson State.

Mitchell was relieved of his head coaching duties last week following a 6-0 loss to Mississippi Valley at home.

Jackson State coach Rick Comegy says the Tigers do not need to sleep on the Jaguars.

"We've got to be ready to play because they have good personnel. They have a good coaching staff left down there. They have some receivers that can catch the football and a defense that will stick you. We can not afford to think they are going to walk in here because their coach left, no way shape or form. We have to play football," said Comegy.

"They are going to come out fighting. This is a big rivalry game. You know, Jackson State and Southern, it doesn't get much bigger. Throw the records out the window. They are 0-3 and we are 1-2. We're not taking them lightly. They have a good team. We're going to come out firing on all cylinders," said JSU quarterback Clayton Moore.

The WC Gordon Classic is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
