A Newton High School student is in critical condition after shooting himself at school Friday, according to WTOK-TV.
The student was airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
WTOK-TV reports the unidentified 17-year-old student lit a cigarette and pulled out a gun in class. The teacher immediately evacuated the classroom.
The school was placed on lock down. A few minutes later, a gunshot was heard.
According to WTOK-TV emergency crews went into the classroom and found the student had shot himself.
School officials say a note or notes were found at the scene of the shooting, according to the Newton County Appeal.
No other students were injured.
Newton High School's football game Friday was canceled in wake of the shooting.
