JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The JPS Partners in Education program hosted its 9th annual Highlight Awards Breakfast Tuesday morning. The awards breakfast is all about recognizing the people who work outside of the school district, but generously volunteer their time and services to the Jackson Public Schools. The JPS Partners in Education program includes churches, and other faith organizations, businesses and civic groups who donate their time and resources to the district. WLBT is one of those partners who received a special recognition on Tuesday. The station has worked with Poindexter Elementary School since 1988 and Blackburn Middle School since 1981.

"You know we cover news everyday and the further we get away from school and we don't have children and this type of thing, it enables us to get into school systems see what's going on with the kids, helps us cover the news better and be more involved in the community," said WLBT General Manager Dan Modisett.

The Partners in Education program has been around for 34 years. There are more than 100 partners who work with the district.
