HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Hinds County Zoning Commission voted down a landfill expansion south of McRaven Road Tuesday afternoon. Protestors who packed the hearing in Raymond claimed victory. Many of those fighting the expansion are homeowners living near the 38 acre facility.
The Faircloth Rubbish landfill owner wants to expand his business by another 30 acres. Tim Parkman told us Monday it's an emotional issue, but a legitimate Clinton business.
Following the vote, cheers erupted in the room. But the attorney representing the Faircloth Landfill said it's not over yet.
"The Commission said what they've said and at this point we will be evaluating our options. Will you appeal? We will be evaluating our options," Joe Deaton.
Clinton homeowner Bill Moore lives within 2,000 feet of the landfill and opposes growth.
"We came into this prepared. We know this was a reclamation site. To expand it and actually have a landfill there would have been wrong and I don't think this board wanted that to be their legacy," said Moore.
The decision reached Tuesday was only a recommendation that will be presented to the Hinds County Supervisors. The landfill owner has 15 days to appeal the decision.
